I have seen Brooke Goldner interviewed on different videos and podcasts about Whole Food Plant Based (WFPB) eating, and loved her vibrancy and clear messaging. The only book of hers that is available from my local library is this one, so I previously avoided it, as I don’t have lupus. But after seeing her interviewed by Chef AJ, where she explained that this book gave the same information as her book Goodbye Autoimmune Disease, but was more succinct, I figured I’d have a read. (I have thyroid antibodies in my blood, so tend to be interested in the link between diet and autoimmune disease.)

I can highly recommend it! If you like short books, that really get to the point, this is it. It is a very quick read, and you come away with a good framework of why you would want to eat WFPB and how to get started.

The first chunk of the book is devoted to explaining her life story, which is actually very interesting, especially being a doctor that has healed herself with knowledge that she DIDN’T get at medical school! Then she outlines the 6 steps to follow for optimal health:

  1. Eliminate Animal Products
  2. Eliminate Added Oils
  3. Eliminate Processed Foods
  4. Hyper-Nourish Yourself with Raw Plant Foods
  5. Consume Omega-3s Every Day
  6. Water, Water, Water

She is a great advocate of drinking green smoothies, and includes a few options in the recipe section at the back of the book. I have been trying them, and they are actually very nice. It’s also a great way of upping your greens if you aren’t a fan of eating them whole.

I also found the clear explanation of the differences between Omega-3 & Omega-6 fatty acids, and each of their pathways in your body. She explains very clearly the correlation between eating processed/animals foods, Omega-6 and the chronic inflammation that creates disease in your body. Then the potent impact of eating Omega-3 rich seeds can have on healing your body.
